MTC is protected from attacking demons by angels

Hard to prove

mtcprovoThe most told version of this legend has the MTC mission president waking in the middle of the night with an awful feeling. He rushes outside and finds several demons (usually dark figures on black horses) heading towards the MTC. The demons suddenly stop and turn back around or disappear. The president then sees angels armed with swords protecting the doors of the MTC.

This legend could come from an account that took place over 100 years ago in the Logan temple. Marriner W. Merrill, president of the Logan temple, recalled a very similar story in which he looked out of the temple windows and saw men on horseback approaching the temple. Merrill was angered at the men taking over the temple grounds and asked who they were. One man said, “I am Satan and these are my people.”

Merrill was then told by the man that he did not like the work that was going on in the temple. Merrill claims that if the temple hadn’t been protected by angels, the men would never have left. (“Saints of Sage and Saddle” by Austin Fife, pg. 222).

This story can also be found in “The First 100 Years: The Logan Temple” by Nolan Prter Olsen.

I once heard a variation on this wherein an Apostle visits the Provo MTC and immediately puts it on lockdown. Later that day during the devotional where hes is speaking, he announces that the spiritual war (angels vs devils) going on outside right then is just too intense, and he didn’t want any missionaires being injured spiritually by it.
