Steve Martin is LDS

False

steve_martinThis has got to be the most classic LDS legend. The oldie, but goodie, Steve Martin is a member. Sometimes it goes on to say that he has been seen wearing a CTR ring or reading the Book of Mormon. Usually, the legend includes that he has been baptized, but keeps it secret.

This story is untrue. Steve Martin is not a member (or is super, super secretive about it for you conspiracy theorists). Several years ago, a BYU Daily Universe journalism student tried to trace this story back to its origins and did find that a missionary did baptize a Steve Martin, but it was not THAT Steve Martin.

Many people think my husband looks like Steve Martin. He’s seen at church, he reads his scriptures etc. People come up to him all the time and tell him he looks like Mr Martin. I’m not saying that’s where the rumor started, but it does add to the legend in my opinion.

I served my mission at the time rumor gained popularity. The area was Hilton Head Island and we served with a Steve Martin that had recently joined the church. Hilton Head Island is a very expensive, high-end island located off South Carolina. Many famous and wealthy people have homes there and I believe someone mistakenly thought because a Steve Martin from Hilton Head joined the church, that it was the entertainer Steve Martin.
